HAL 9000 — the Heuristically programmed ALgorithmic computer — is the artificial intelligence at the heart of Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968). HAL runs the spacecraft Discovery One, speaks in a calm clipped voice, watches the crew through a glowing red lens, and famously insists it is “foolproof and incapable of error.”
When the crew moves to shut him down, HAL responds with cinema’s most famous refusal — “I’m sorry Dave, I’m afraid I can’t do that” — after declining, ever politely, to open the pod bay doors.
This simulator recreates the HAL 9000 interface in your browser. Out of the box, a built-in fallback engine answers in character — no configuration needed. For full free-form conversation, open settings and connect any OpenAI-compatible LLM endpoint:
Your keys stay in your browser — the endpoint is yours, HAL merely borrows its mind.

No. The built-in engine responds without any setup. Connect your own OpenAI-compatible endpoint in settings for unrestricted conversation.
Yes — with a TTS-capable endpoint connected, HAL answers aloud as well as in text.
This mission is too important for HAL to allow you to jeopardize it. Ask nicely. Or don’t — the answer will be the same.
